Northern Challenge Series 2021

* A new Stags task

* A changed Murton task

* A new, later start date 1st March due to Covid. ALL BHPA or Club directives over-ride this.

* A new EN C and below award. Glider rating required when you enter a flight and displayed.

* Scoring algorithm and rules remain the same. ALL individual club rules apply to all sites on which a task is based.

Northern XC League

There is now a Northern XC league competition designed to allow northern clubs to compete without the issues of getting to some of the more distant long distance take offs.

The six clubs involved are:

Northumbria Hang Gliding and Paragliding Club
Pennine Soaring Club

BP Cup 2019

Entries for the 2019 rounds are now open and we have a round in the Pennines and one in the Yorkshire Dales. As requested by our pilots last year, entry is now restricted to EN A, B and C gliders only, Tandems are allowed but the same pilot must fly both rounds. All competitors must be pilot rated. Grid Challenge Completed again!

Since the Northern Challenge Trophy started, people have stopped telling me when they've done Grid Challenges. So I missed this until now: Geoff Crossley came to Parlick on May 18th, rattled round the whole grid challenge in an hour and a half AND made it back to the hill! Amazing!

Northern Challenge Trophy

A reminder about the Northern Challenge Trophy - a competition anyone can enter whenever they like, with REAL MONEY prizes. Here's the current standings, with only a couple of intrepid Pennine pilots on the scoreboard so far. When the weather gets a bit better, let's see some more scores up there, eh?

Parlick Grid attempt

As predicted at last night's Club Night, today's weather was good for a Parlick Grid attempt. Chairman Jones trundle round the first 9 cylinders AND made it back to the ridge, thus scoring 9.5 points - the first score of the 2018 season.
And as the PGC is one of the challenges in the Northern Challenge Trophy, that also means he's the first Pennine pilot on that scoreboard too, clocking up 223 points (tbc).

Grid Challenge Record Broken!

July 12th was a good day for the Grid Challenge. Mike Endacott scored a solid 8 on his first attempt, Simon Baillie came back and equalled his previous best with 11, but the big news is Phil Colbert has smashed the record by tagging the first THIRTEEN cylinders, in numerical order, in one flight.

The Loop League Returns!

At the AGM it was announced, somewhat perfunctorily, that the loop league trophy would be retired after being awarded for the 2013 season. There were a number of reasons for this, including:

Needing to submit flights to a second league (Leonardo) made it more complicated
Technical issues with the league website meant it didn't work as smoothly as it should
Further technical issues meant it didn't display properly (or at all sometimes) on the club website
The existence of the grid challenge, which it was felt duplicated some of the elements of the point of the loop league

But the committee has changed its mind! It regards loop flights as something to be encouraged. Independently planning and executing a loop flight (out & return or triangle) is an challenge that can push forward a pilot's skills without the additional concern of arranging retrieves that downwind XCs require, and is sufficiently distinct from the grid challenge that it's worth keeping on.

Pennine takes the lead!

After a cold, windy winter, springtime is definitely here. Some big flights have already been put in the league, including a big declared triangle in the Lakes on Saturday April 6th achieved by not one, not two, but three of our top pilots. Many others have also been out and about, which means at the time of writing, Pennine is not only the leading club in the XC League with 1221 points - with 13 pilots in play we're also the most active! And many of our "usual suspects" have yet to blow the cobwebs off and submit a flight - so come on, the weather's turning and it's time to play...

Graham Jones opens Pennine's XC Season

Congratulations and well done to Graham Jones, who is PSC's very first entrant into the UK National XC League for 2013. And a cracking flight it is too - the classic "Totteridge Run" from Parlick, done very early in the year, February 18th. If you'd like to review his flight, you can see it here; click on the XC Player tab for a detailed view. Remember, while the Totteridge run can be quite tricky, you can fly a National League qualifying flight from Parlick without ever leaving the hill, and this year we want to see at least one 10km+ flight in the league from every member, and the weather is now coming good...

Pennines top UK XC Club league

2012 saw the Pennines at the TOP of the UK XC club league, again, with a dramatic 3248 points!

Thanks to the top 4 Pennine pilots: Barney Woodhead, Phil Colbert, Phil Wallbank and Mark Wilson (cheers dudes!). Second year running and this time it wasn't even really that close...

BP Cup Victory

The 2012 BPCup was won by a Pennine pilot for the fifth time in a row. Congratulations to Phil Wallbank, who was successfully in goal with a flight over 50km from the Long Mynd and a flight of over 100km from Bradwell.
